Foundation & History of CranioSacral Therapy

The history of CranioSacral Therapy dates back to the early 1900s, when osteopathic physician William Sutherland was struck by the unusual idea that the bones of the skull were structured to allow for movement. For more than 20 years he explored this concept, eventually developed a system of examination and treatment know as Cranial Osteopathy.

Then in 1970, Dr. John E. Upledger observed the rhythmic movement of the craniosacral system firsthand during surgery. Yet none of his colleagues nor any medical texts could explain his discovery.
Two years later, Dr. Upledger attended a seminar that explained Sutherland’s ideas, as well as some of his evaluation and treatment techniques. Coupling a scientific background with tactile sensitivity, Dr. Upledger was quick to understand how a hydraulic system using cerebrospinal fluid might function inside a membranous sac encased within the skull and spinal column canal. He incorporated and refined Dr. Sutherland’s techniques with success.

Note: See schematic picture of The Autonomic Nervous System below.

Dr. Upledger then set out to scientifically confirm the existence of the craniosacral system. In 1975 he was asked to join the Oseiopathic College at Michigan State University as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics. There he led a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists and bioengineers to test and document the influence of therapy on the craniosacral system.
For the first time they were able to explain, in both scientific and practical terms, the function of the craniosacral system. They also demonstrated how this system could be used to evaluate and treat malfunctions involving the brain and spinal cord, as well as a myriad of other health problems that were previously misunderstood.

Dr. Upledger’s continued work in the field - as well as that of Dr. Zvi Karni, PhD, Biomechanics - resulted in the development of CranioSacral Therapy.
In the decades since his initial research, Dr Upledger has written three textbooks and has detailed the functioning of the craniosacral system. He has also written two books explaining CranioSacral Therapy to the public: Your Inner Physician and You and A Brain Is Born: Exploring the Birth and Development of the Central Nervous System.
In 1985, Dr Upledger established The Upledger Institute, Inc. (, a clinical and educational resource center founded to teach the public and healthcare practitioners about the benefits of CranioSacral Therapy. To date, The Upledger Institute had trained more than 27,000 healthcare practitioners worldwide in the use of CranioSacral Therapy.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy has a version named Bio Cranial Therapy. All CranioSacral Therapy (CST) versions are used to treat arthritis, rheumatic disorders, fibromyalgia, gastric disorders, hiatus hernia, ulceration, colitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, tinnitus, prostate disorders, Meniere's syndrome; cardiovascular problems including hypertension, angina, psoriasis, eczema, acne etc, dysmenorrhoea, PMS, menorrhagia, asthma and bronchial disorders including bronchiectasis and emphysema, and almost all types of brain/spinal/neurological disorders.

CranioSacral Therapy is an amazingly effective method with almost instant improvement in many difficult cases. It is a safe, gentle and non-invasive hands-on method, performed by a very light touch (less than the weight of a nickel).
The purpose is to determine if there are any abnormalities in the rhythmic pulse of the body fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, and correct these & their causes. CST can produce amazing results where other methods have been ineffective.
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is also used as a preventive therapy: enhancing the body's natural ability to heal, and resulting in deep relaxation. Learn more about CST

Simona Glekel uses CranioSacral Therapy in combination with these Bio-Energy & Bio-Mechanics methods: Somato-Emotional Release, Visceral Manipulation, Lymphatic Drainage, Functional Endocrinology, & Medical Clinical Qigong Therapy. Whenever necessary she will also utilize Reiki, Qi Reflexology, EFT and Acu-pressure.

CRANIO refers to the cranium, SACRAL refers to the sacrum of the human body. Cranial Sacral is an alternative terminology. CranioSacral specialists work on these areas:
  • the hydraulic system consisting of the skeletal & cranial bones, the cerebro-spinal and other fluids, and brain/nerves of the body (to maximize nerve & brain functioning, to optimize brain development e.g. in children, and to improve fluid flow and thereby increase healing & detoxification,)
  • combined with energy work, e.g. release of tissue/membrane tensions (that e.g. may pinch nerves or hinder important fluid flow) and energy cysts.
  • and with normalizing of skeletal movements and correction of cranial & skeletal dislocations, which may be caused by accidents, impacts or even birth procedures like C-sections. No force is used, instead a unique method of light touch and the time factor, a method that slips under the defenses of the body.

It is easy to damage the sensitive CRANIOSACRAL SYSTEM. A simple fall from a bicycle as a child can caused some of the cranial bones to lock together, which then easily leads to inexplainable brain or nerve disorders or other problems later in life. Luckily, this can usually be quickly corrected by an experienced expert. The first step is a CRANIOSACRAL EVALUATION. This will quickly find irregularities in the pulse of the CerebroSpinal fluid, in all parts of the body, which is a quick and elegant way to locate blockages or cranial injuries.
Every person should have a CranioSacral evaluation at least once in their lifetime, for optimal brain functioning. This can prevent a lot of inexplainable suffering, and is especially important for Caesarian-born babies, and for people who have been in car accidents, or whose heads have once received a hard hit.
